Volunteer Hours
At Saint Michael Lutheran School, we believe parent involvement strengthens our school community, enhances the educational experience, and fosters a sense of family among students, parents, and staff.
Each SMLS family is required to complete 20 volunteer hours per school year, as established by the Board of Christian Education.
Our PTL offers a wide range of opportunities to fulfill these hours throughout the school year!
Policy Reminder
All SMLS volunteer hours must be submitted using the designated digital form. If families do not complete or submit their 20 volunteer hours by the end of the school year, an invoice of $300 (20 hours @ $15/hour) will be sent, as outlined in the school handbook. Final totals will be shared before invoices are sent.

MUST GET A BACKGROUND CHECK & BE FINGERPRINTED.
YOU WILL EARN ONE VOLUNTEER HOUR PER PERSON FOR COMPLETING
This is for anyone who plans to be with students on/off campus, including:
in the classroom, class parties and holiday events, at PTL events, on field trips, etc.

NEW THIS SCHOOL YEAR:
This year, SMLS has moved to a quarterly volunteer hour submission process.
Families will track their own hours during each quarter and submit them during the designated submission window.
Only one form per family per quarter should be submitted, and it must list all hours for that quarter on one form.
Late submissions not accepted unless rolled into next quarter (only if absolutely necessary)

Important Distinction Between SMLS School Hours, PTL, and Church Volunteering
The 20-hour volunteer requirement is a SMLS requirement, not a PTL requirement nor a church requirement. PTL exists to help support the school and to offer volunteer opportunities that count toward the SMLS school volunteer hours, but the requirement itself is set by the school’s Board of Christian Education.
While we deeply value and encourage church volunteering as part of our shared faith and community, please note that church hours are considered separate and do not count toward the SMLS school volunteer requirement.
To keep things fair and in line with policy, activities may not be counted for both church-related benefits and school volunteer hours—we appreciate your understanding as we strive to honor the integrity of both commitments.
